Mulo Shoes Loafers Review

As summer is just around the corner, it will soon be time to exchange our boots and shoes for something more suitable for the season. Fashionable men around the globe will undoubtedly opt for a classic loafer thanks to its timeless style – in keeping with this; my latest blog post review will be of the Mulo Loafers – read on to find out more!

Mulo was launched in 2012 by Tobias and Ingrid Cox, who’s names have been attached to other illustrious brands including Bumble & Bumble and Box. Tobias had a passion for upgrading and elevating the standard canvas espadrille, allowing them to outlast the summer season and be wearable throughout the whole year. The London based company designs all of their footwear in-house, which are then realised into the final product at a family run business in Porta, Portugal.

Notably in 2015 Mulo was selected by Walpole as a brand of tomorrow, sitting comfortably alongside brands such as Burberry, Harrods and Jimmy Choo.

Moving onto the review, I will be taking a look at the brand’s iconic loafer in beige.

Design And Style

The style of the Mulo loafers is one which is based around a timeless design, more in-tune with classic men’s fashions seen during the 50s and 60s when style had a touch of elegance largely forgotten in the modern-day. Fortunately, much of this is being reversed with men looking to bygone eras for clothing inspiration. The loafers may have a quintessential appearance, but the design has been modernised to fit in with current trends and needs. The upper body boasts a soft, high-quality Italian suede (which has just the right amount of textured feel) whereas the sole is constructed using 100% natural rubber, ensuring that they will last much longer than traditional footwear in a similar style.

Each shoe is shaped on the infamous Oxford last, ensuring the main body is of high quality. The shoes are hand made, and hand-stitched too, which is always a top selling point compared to the typical factory machine creation, which is all too common in this day and age.

The loafers are available in a variety of colours – White, Brown, Khaki and the Tan which I chose for myself. Each presents a beautiful finish, and I would be equally happy with any of them in my shoe collection, although for me the tan just raised the bar slightly higher in terms of pairing with more outfits.

Wearability And Comfort

The Mulo shoes are entirely in tune with the summer months combining effortlessly with shirts, shorts and all manner of lighter weight clothing with the fresh or pastel colour tones which are popular during the season. Likewise, during the cooler months the loafers are still a viable option thanks to their hardy workmanship and sturdy soles – in fact, the colour palettes of the shoes complement the autumnal neutral colours beautifully.

Special mention must go to the level of comfort which accompanies the Mulo loafers – during my time wearing them; I was pleasantly surprised with the level of cushioning thanks to the soft inner lining and arch supports. The shoes also feature elasticated side panels allowing the wearer to slip them on easily and remove them without fuss, which I know from experience can sometimes be a hindrance as found with competing brands.

Sizing

When choosing my size, I opted for my standard size of a UK 8 / EU 42 – which ended up fitting perfectly, my foot slipped inside quickly without any trouble. The shoe is soft on the foot and extremely comfortable when worn and on the move.

Packaging

The packaging for the Mulo loafers is undeniably high quality – all over white design constructed out of a smooth, soft-touch card material featuring a subtle embossed logo along the top of the box. On the front of the box is a small orange fabric tab, when lifted will open the box (held firmly shut with a secure magnetic closure) and reveal a vibrant orange lining which beautifully contrasts against the white exterior design.

The shoes are held in place using tissue paper, which is wrapped around each shoe to protect them from one another. Overall the box is well designed and sturdy, ideal for storage amongst others in your shoe collection.

Overall

With all that is happening in the world, looking after one’s outgoings is a priority; fortunately, the Mulo Loafers are priced very competitively, especially when you take into account they are all handmade in Portugal rather than on a factory line. Yes, there are shoes with a similar look for a slightly lower price, but then you would sacrifice a higher level of quality, not to mention the design and superior comfort. For me, I would most certainly say they are worth their price point, and I would highly recommend them to anyone in the market for a summer shoe which has the dual benefit of wearability all year round.
