Trending Autumn Styles For Men’s Workwear
As we approach the fall season, often described as a transitional period for men’s clothing choices, we need to incorporate styles that will work in temperatures that are neither too hot nor too cold. In my latest article, I will look at a number of versatile pieces suitable for your day at the office during the autumn season.
When putting together outfits in the midst of fall, it is essential to source items that can be mixed and matched and layered together, creating something truly eye-catching. This is doubly important for work, as you will want to be comfortable throughout the day yet still look your absolute best.
Do you rush out the door each morning, with barely time to spare, clutching your travel mugs filled to the brew with strong coffee? Or do you plan and enjoy taking things slow before your work day begins? Whichever category you fall into, it is vital to have a plan of action for clothing attire during fall.
Fall Fashion Basics
When it comes to fall fashion, layering and versatility are vital in obtaining amazingly stylish outfits. This season, in particular, offers some of the best variety in terms of clothing and accessories, especially thanks to the wonderful colour tones available. You can simplify the process further by blending pieces from your summer and winter wardrobe together to create a fantastic layered ensemble (while acknowledging the changing seasons).
If your wardrobe consists of balanced and versatile pieces (similar to a capsule style collection), it allows you to easily experiment with your existing clothing items, creating brand-new outfits with a vast array of colour combinations.
Even though the autumn weather can be very unpredictable (especially in the UK), from bouts of hot sun to stormy rainy days, dressing in multi-layers (that can be added or removed when necessary) will allow you to combat the fluctuating temperatures when needed.
In fashion circles, spring and fall wardrobes are regularly regarded as transitional—for example, a simple, lightweight knit can be worn alone on warmer days, over a button-up shirt during temperate weather, or layered under a coat when the cold air descends.
Hybrid Dressing
As more companies have begun to incorporate hybrid working conditions for their staff, especially in the corporate world, it has also caused a shift in clothing attire choices. Many office-style uniforms have become more fluid and less formal, more suited to home and office setups.
Here are a few all-season examples to help you make a start –
- Trench Coat – lightweight jacket, suitable for all seasons (and waterproof).
- Tailored trousers – opt for slim-fit styles for a sleek silhouette with a light colour palette.
- Black leather loafers – choose simple, plain styles that are super versatile.
Each of these items can easily be mixed and matched with several other pieces (such as simple knits, crisp white shirts, and accessories like a tie, belt, and watch), creating a fashionable work-anywhere uniform.
No matter the event, occasion or meeting, you can easily layer them with similar toned items to make something more or less formal, depending on the situation.
Textures
One of the most popular options for men’s fashion during the autumn is textured pieces, such as mohair cardigans, wool jumpers, corduroy trousers and suede or leather jackets. Adding just one or two of these styles to your ensemble will create an added layer and item of interest, turning an otherwise plain outfit into something spectacular.
Even though textured trends will provide various experimental opportunities, not all will be suitable for the workplace. If you want to incorporate alternative textures into your office looks, choose neutral colour palettes such as black, grey, brown, and navy. You can consider patterns, but only if they are minimalistic. Sticking to this selection will ensure your outfits are office-ready but still permit you to showcase your unique fashion-forward taste.
Lightweight Knit
During the autumn season, the temperature can change constantly each hour – making it quite challenging to decide on a suitable outfit for the whole day in the office. An effective way to defeat this dilemma is to choose versatile layering options such as a lightweight knitted sweater – the unsung hero.
When shopping for that perfect knit sweater, consider one that isn’t too bulky so you can layer easily over a t-shirt or collared shirt for a perfect blend of comfort and style. Additionally, this style will work just as well under a rain jacket or overcoat.
For something a little different, choose a half-zip jumper crafted from extra-fine merino wool or even a cotton-wool blend, which will pair with a pair of denim jeans or tailored trousers.
Boots For All Occasions
As with all aspects of fashion, versatility with footwear is essential. Although loafers are often considered one of the most easy-to-wear shoes available, they are not the best choice during rainy days or when snow falls.
Ankle boots will fill that void instead during bad weather, with Chelsea boots being particularly popular. They have quality construction and a solid structure that works just as well in the office as it does for causal evenings out (and withstanding all sorts of different elements).
My personal choice is suede (as they offer a fantastic visual style), but leather is best for the Autumn season as the material stands up well against bad weather and ages like a fine wine.
Business Casual
Even though pretty much all corporate offices (although there are always exceptions to the rule) demand a certain dress code, many modern corporations shy away from traditional looks, allowing their employees more freedom in their outfit choices at work. Even though you can wear something more casual, you must always keep up appearances, ensuring your outfits tick all those style boxes.
Why not swap out a button-up shirt with a textured polo (if not compulsory) or even a smart plan knitted jumper over a basic tee? Instead, opt for a classic buttoned shirt with a quirky collar, showcasing a touch of style (and allowing you to drop the tie).
For trousers, instead of pigeonholing yourself into one size, choose tailored styles with adjustable waist functionality. This way, you can mix comfort and style on the fly throughout the day.
