How To Establish A Professional Grooming Routine At Home
For many modern men with overloaded schedules, there is very little time to visit an expensive salon or spa. This aspect has prompted a shift to DIY grooming among image-conscious guys. In my latest article, I will share how you can build a quality grooming regime in the comfort of your own home.
A recent survey has discovered that 85% of the population perform a variety of grooming tasks at home – from face care, cutting and dyeing hair, to even nail treatments. However, if you are dead set on going down the DIY route, it is essential that you get the basics right – this means you need to focus on consistency and attention to detail in everything you do.
In the following steps, I will share how you can manage an at-home grooming routine along with some rules to live by, to guarantee that you always look your absolute best.
Establish A Grooming Schedule
When it comes to self-care and grooming, timing is absolutely everything. Many parts of your regimen need to be taken care of on a daily basis – for example, hair and skin demand TLC almost every day! Haircuts and nail treatments require less frequent care, and can wait a few weeks before you need to attend to them.
Establish a set schedule for the critical areas of your grooming regime, dedicating the required amount of attention each day, week, and month (specifically for the aspects of your appearance you want to keep on top of).
Know Your Hair Type
For many men, ensuring their hair looks great is essential – it’s the finishing touch to every stylish outfit. As such, you need to focus a lot of your attention on making it look tip-top.
For a daily DIY hair care routine, it’s all about the oils. Invest in a quality sulphate-free shampoo which is suitable for your specific hair type (which will ensure you do not strip it of its natural oils).
Understand Your Hair Type
Knowing whether you have curly, straight, fine, or thick hair is crucial. This knowledge will guide you towards products that make your follicles more manageable, ensuring your locks look fresh and shiny.
Use Professional Scissors
Many guys will often resort to trimming their own hair (which can save a lot of money!). However, avoid chopping your hair with the standard pair of scissors tucked away in the kitchen drawer – they will be far too bulky and nowhere near sharp enough to offer a precision cut.
Instead, splash out on a good pair of hair-trimming scissors from a quality brand (such as those offered by CoolBlades), which will provide salon-grade scissors that help you achieve a trend-setting, sleek hairstyle.
Salon-grade scissors are the perfect accessory for the modern gent who loves to tackle his own hair – super sharp, which allows for accurate cutting and trimming.
Keep On Top Of Skin Care
It may seem like achieving radiant-looking skin at home is an impossible task, but by following these three simple steps, you can take a step closer to a professional glow –
- Clean your skin: Twice a day, morning and night – use a gentle cleanser to unclog your pores and prepare them for the next two stages.
- Exfoliate your skin: it is essential that you remove any dead skin. Select a physical scrubbing device (such as a silicone brush or konjac sponge) and then use it on the rough areas of your skin, using gentle circular motions (30 seconds at a time).
- Moisturise: Keep your skin hydrated to keep your complexion looking its absolute best. Seek out the best moisturiser for your particular skin (for dry skin, use a creamy shea butter, for sensitive skin, opt for a fragrance-free cream) and apply twice a day, so that the cream can absorb naturally.
Care For Your Cuticles
Even guys deserve to have excellent-looking nails, so you must keep them healthy. The nail plates are undoubtedly the easiest section to take care of. Trim them regularly with a pair of quality clippers, file the edges for a smooth finish, then finally buff the plate.
For the cuticles (the skin at the bottom of the nails), you may find it to be more of a challenge to maintain effectively! However, if you keep them in check, it will ensure that your nails look great, are healthy and keep bacteria at bay.
Top tip: Soften the cuticle with a quick (5-10 minutes) soak in warm-ish water just before you begin the treatment process.
Once they are softened, gently push the cuticle back with a small wooden tool, preventing cuticle overgrowth while also providing your nails with extra definition.
Conclusion
By taking the correct approach and with dedication, DIY grooming can save you a lot of time and money. Set yourself a timetable and schedule each week for some “me time,” and also educate yourself on your specific hair, skin, and nail type.
Once these factors are put in place (and you stick to your plan), then you will be able to enjoy an improvement in your overall appearance and an added boost to your confidence.
