How To Protect Your Feet When Running
If you are a fitness buff who loves to hit the track, it can sometimes be difficult to find footwear that protects your feet after strenuous cardio sessions. My latest article will look at a variety of ways to help achieve this goal.
Cardio is an important aspect of fitness, even for heavy-lifting gym fanatics! However, long runs on a machine or out on the streets can severely affect your feet. Fortunately, there are several ways you can help defend yourself from any ill effects of regular cardio sessions.
Invest In Quality Footwear
It may seem obvious, but purchasing quality footwear is the first point of call. Many of the big sports brands are famed for creating super-comfortable sneakers and trainers that are made for running. Nike is infamous for its air cushioning (starting a sensation that has endured for decades), invented to protect your heels during heavy activity. Likewise, rival brands such as Adidas and New Balance offer their way of supporting your feet during wear.
However, it’s not just about the name! Always try on your chosen pairs and test them out (around the home) to see if they are suitable and will not cause any discomfort down the line. As an extra precaution, you could even slip gel insoles into your trainers for an added level of comfort and protection during your runs.
Comfortable Socks
The socks you wear with your trainers are equally important. Standard socks that are ill-fitting or unsuitable for high amounts of sweat or the heavy impact of running can cause foot blisters or other injuries.
Instead, choose socks designed for running activities. They will be lightweight and often feature water-resistant properties. These attributes allow your feet to breathe, reducing the risk of discomfort and blisters.
Pamper Your Feet
Even though the skin on your feet is typically rugged and hard-wearing, regular running exercises can cause skin issues such as dry skin that, if left unchecked, can lead to cracking and bleeding (severely affecting your fitness lifestyle).
Combat this risk by indulging in regular moisturising sessions that will soften your skin, protecting it from the hardship of regular cardio.
Warm Up Exercises
As with all exercises, warming up beforehand is a habit you need to encourage. Although most warm-up exercises focus on the whole body, many will also benefit the feet.
Many people are guilty of jumping straight into the gym or heading off for a run, but this is a big risk and can cause you to end up with an injury (potentially stopping your fitness goals long-term). Instead, do some basic warm-up and stretching exercises (and even cool-down versions once your routine is completed) to keep those injuries at bay and your feet nice and healthy!
Summary
Always remember to look after your feet, especially during your workout regime—choose quality footwear and comfy socks, moisturise your feet, and incorporate warm-up exercises. With these factors in place, you can enjoy regular workout sessions, knowing your feet are safe and well-protected.
