Beyond Watches: How To Style Men’s Jewellery
In the world of men’s fashion, jewellery is a key element that can significantly enhance your outfit and also express your individual personality. In my latest article, I will offer tips on how to style a variety of accessories in order to achieve a stylish look.
Rings
Rings have long been an important staple in men’s jewellery. Minimalist bands are a timeless option for everyday wear. In contrast, textured signet rings are a fantastic statement option for special occasions (and can even be engraved with custom text, shapes, or symbols to make them personalised to you). You can keep it simple with a single ring, or stack multiple pieces on different fingers. Additionally, rings can be paired with a watch by matching the metal tones. Conversely, chunky wood or bronze rings can complement timepieces with a leather strap for a more rugged aesthetic.
Bracelets
Bracelets are excellent additions that can pair well with both formal and casual attire. Choose a simple bead bracelet for a laid-back, subtle effect (stacked together will create a strong visual effect). Leather cuffs or metal bracelets offer a bold style and typically work best with short-sleeve tops (though they are still effective when paired with knitwear). Bracelets and watches combine well, but it is best to avoid designs that clash – for example, if you plan on wearing a visually strong designer watch, then opt for a subtle bracelet so that there is no distraction.
Necklaces
Necklaces can add an invaluable layer of depth to your outfits. Thin chains are a popular look – tucked into a crew-neck top or button-up shirt for a refined look, or wear over a tee for a casual vibe (remember to stick to chains that are 4-6mm in width to ensure they are clearly visible).
Men’s silver jewellery can provide a sophisticated appearance, whereas bead necklaces are informal options. When layering necklaces, choose different lengths so each piece stands out. Don’t be afraid to explore pendants which will deliver a standout focal piece – think geometric shapes, religious symbols, or even a dog tag! Furthermore, precious stones like onyx and malachite can add an extra touch of luxury, while remaining masculine in tone.
Piercings
If you want to go one step further (and you’re ok with piercings!), you can incorporate earrings or studs into your style. A popular option is to opt for a charm (such as a crucifix or sword) in one ear, leaving the other bare. However, you can also complement a jewellery piece with another (such as a nose piercing); remember to choose the same metal tone to provide balance.
Rules For Styling Men’s Jewellery
One vital element to consider is the suitability of your jewellery items for the right occasion – for instance, in many workplaces it is best to keep it subtle, reserving bolder designs for social occasions (parties, nights out, or big events).
Consider the 2-1-1 rule when balancing out your jewellery –
- 2 pieces on the hands/wrist
- 1 piece around the neck
- 1 statement piece close to the face
Try to avoid mixing metals to create a sense of harmony, though in some cases it may be possible to embrace asymmetry to make specific designs stand out.
