From Office Parties To Christmas Dinner: What To Wear This Festive Season

The festive season is undoubtedly a busy time for the social butterfly. There will be a variety of family dinners to attend, last-minute drinks with friends and the all-important office parties to navigate! Each event demands a unique choice of outfit to tick those functional yet stylish boxes. Carry on reading for more.

Planning ahead can easily eliminate last-minute wardrobe raids. This will remove the pressure as we head into December, allowing you time to build a fantastic array of looks for every possible occasion. Just remember, it doesn’t have to be complicated, and if done right, it can even be a fun process!

Office Parties

Office parties can be a challenge – you will want to look the ever-stylish gent, without trying too hard (it is still work, after all!). Smart-casual is the classic choice – tailored trousers or smart, dark jeans, paired with a crisp shirt (sans tie). Add layering for extra points, such as a fitted blazer, a velvet jacket or even a smart knit.

Complete the look with a pair of freshly polished shoes (brogues are a great option) or suede Chelsea boots if you want to keep informal.

If the theme of the party is more relaxed (or even in the office itself), add a festive touch! Consider adding a pop of colour to your ensemble, bold accessories, or even a classic Christmas jumper (if suitable for the occasion).

Family Gatherings

A festive family get-together typically involves a long meal, sitting around catching up with relatives, and ample time moving between the kitchen and the sofa – a festive ensemble may suit the occasion, but comfort is the number one key.

For a safe option, throw on a soft knit and a fitted (but not too tight) pair of jeans or trousers, along with footwear that’s easy to wear for long hours (loafers or minimalistic sneakers are a great choice). That said, you can still add a glimmer of seasonal flair to the proceedings (without feeling like you are gearing up for a photoshoot). If you want to achieve a slightly more dressed-up flavour, opt for a smart button-up with tailored trousers (perhaps accompanied by a blazer or even a tie for added elegance).

As a final thought, choose pieces that are photo-ready just in case you get caught up in those impromptu family snaps to preserve the occasion.

Friends And Festive Drinks

When you think of December, you instantly envision the big occasions; however, there are always smaller plans that quickly fill up the calendar, such as after-work drinks, catch-ups with friends, or even spontaneous events that seem to happen with no planning.

These events are the perfect opportunity to have some extra fun with your outfit – statement jumpers, bolder colours or something much more outlandish than your typical ensemble!

For example, if it’s a casual evening (like a visit to the pub), a pair of slim-cut jeans, boots, and a textured knit create a relaxed yet fashionable getup. On the other hand, if it’s a fancier establishment (like a classy bar or high-end restaurant), then opt for smart outerwear (overcoat or peacoat is a grand choice), which can be slipped over a formal selection (roll-neck jumper with fitted trousers or even a shirt and tie combo).

Christmas Day

December 25th can be very different for everyone, but for many people, it is a day to indulge in delicious food (taking a break from their strict fitness regime for the day) and spend time with family members. As such, you must choose clothing which looks festive without feeling unnecessarily restrictive.

A popular option is to go all out with a bright Christmas jumper, which is both fun and easy to wear. Alternatively, a simple knit with denim or a relaxed shirt and trousers combo (which provides ample space for that big Christmas dinner you have been eyeing up!) is a winning choice.

No matter what you wear, layering is your friend – a quality cardigan or soft-touch jumper can be taken on and off throughout the day, while comfortable shoes can save you from having to parade around in your socks by mid-afternoon.

New Year’s Eve

NYE celebrations generally sway towards smarter wardrobe decisions (even if you plan on staying in with loved ones). If you do decide to head out, a blazer (perhaps even velvet for an element of glitz) and trousers combo is a fabulous option.

If you are bringing in the new year from home, grab something comfortable with a splash of colour or eye-catching detailing that can still make the night feel truly special.

Making It Your Own

Remember that dressing successfully for a festive event doesn’t require you to follow a strict rulebook; instead, it’s all about finding the balance between comfort, confidence and a little nod to the season. Whether you love the iconic glam or prefer an understated vibe, you will be able to create a fantastic look with a little thought and preparation. You don’t need to invest in an entirely new wardrobe – a few small additions, such as a quality jumper, a fitted coat, or a premium pair of shoes, can instantly elevate almost any outfit with a festive edge.
