How to Stay Stylish If You Work In The Emergency Services

If you are into fashion and care about your appearance, it can be difficult to keep your style on point during your workday, especially if you operate in the emergency services sector. In my latest article, I will offer help and advice to ensure you can maintain your individuality and style even when wearing your uniform.

The emergency services in every country are essential to keeping the population safe and sound—from the police force dealing with constant crime to the ambulance services saving lives daily. Each department typically has its own uniform (which looks different depending on the country or state) in a variety of bold colours.

However, as much as it is necessary to wear a uniform that is easily identifiable by the public (so they can react accordingly during an emergency), you often have to let go of your individuality each time you wear the outfit.

In this fashion-based article, I will look at various ways you can still incorporate touches of your personal style during your workday, making you feel more like you (even amid an emergency!).

Tattoos

One of the best ways to showcase your individuality, even if you are restricted to wearing a particular uniform, is with tattoos. Permanently etched into your skin, these beautifully designed pieces of artwork can be worn no matter what you do for a living.
Many emergency services departments are pretty easy-going regarding tattoos (country dependent), and you can often see police officers and fire crews rocking cool-looking ink (especially when their sleeves are rolled up).

Jewellery

Wearing unique jewellery is another way to keep your chic style visible when working in the emergency services sector—rings, bracelets, and necklaces are excellent additions (although, depending on safety, certain pieces might not be allowed). At the very least, stick to rope or leather bracelets and a necklace (that can be hidden beneath your work shirt when in the office).

Custom Clothing

Even though you are required to wear a uniform to match your brothers and sisters in the unit, you can sometimes adapt and purchase your custom clothing.
If you are an officer of the law, this could be down to a unique style of footwear (maybe a boot with different stitching or pattern) or even a variation of a men’s wildland FR shirt (if you work in protecting forests from fire outbreaks and need flame resistance). Even the smallest details changed can give you that extra confidence boost and ensure you still have a little of you inside that uniform.

Headwear

Certain areas of emergency services teams have been known to wear headwear – most often seen in the police department, such as special forces or SWAT (although typically limited to baseball caps and beanies, for that added touch of cool!). This will, of course, be very country-dependent and only limited to very unique departments.

Facial Hair

For men in the emergency services, why not grow stylish facial hair? This is a fantastic way to showcase your unique fashion tastes to the world (even in uniform). Typically, you can at least rock the unshaven look (for a bit of gruff), but many sectors will even allow you to grow out a full beard, making you look ‘tougher,’ which is particularly useful in the police force!

Summary

Even if you work in the emergency services, whether police, fire, or medical, you can still insert small touches of your individuality into your daily uniforms—start small, and adapt and add extra details wherever possible. This will allow you to feed your inner fashionista even when solving crimes, putting out fires, and saving lives.
