How To Dress Appropriately For A Formal Event

Fashion trends have experienced a rollercoaster of different styles over the last few decades, with casual attire the most common type of dress on the street (and even office dress codes have often dropped the shirt and tie number in favour of something much more relaxed). However, despite this shift, important formal events demand a smart dress code. In my latest article, I will share some top tips to ensure you look the part at those high-end functions. Continue reading for more.

Even though many men enjoy dressing down in sports gear, street-style looks, and even loungewear (not just in the comfort of their own home but also when venturing outside), there is always room to slip on a beautifully structured formal getup.

Consider The Dress Code

The most important factor is to check the dress code for the occasion – some events will absolutely require a full black tie ensemble (bonus points for a satin bow tie). In contrast, others are a step down, but still demand a suit and tie number (even a three-piece with waistcoat), and for some occasions, there is a lot more play with your clothing choices (as long as you keep it smart), where you can throw on a fitted knit, tailored trousers, and a sleek pair of brogues or loafers.

Fit Is King

No matter what the dress code states, it is vital that your chosen pieces fit impeccably – elements of your outfit (whether it is a blazer, jumper, or shirt) will always look great if the fit is on point. A sloppy, ill-fitting outfit will make you look messy and that you do not care about how you look (and more often than not, that you just grabbed anything off the rack without a second thought). The best advice is to head to a store and try on clothes for the event, or if buying online, order a few different sizes to ensure you get something that fits well and shows off your shape (while hiding any bumps!).

On the other hand, you could splash the cash on something tailored (or even bespoke) to build an ensemble made for your individual build and measurements, instantly elevating your entire look.

Match With Your Partner

Many special affairs allow you to bring a plus-one (and your partner will typically be the one to join you), so it is always a great idea to complement each other in your outfit choices. Rather than matching completely (although that can create a striking visual effect if your suit and her gown pop with the exact same shade!), consider a few standout pieces that complement each other (such as a tie, pocket square for him, and jewellery, bags, shoes for her).

Before you head out, plan in advance and raid your wardrobe for a selection of suitable clothes that will work with something from your partner’s huge collection of stylish womens dresses in her closet – this way, you will know exactly what you are both going to wear long before the event.

Accessories For The Finishing Touch

Once your outfit is sorted (and your partners), remember to spice everything up with top-tier accessories – a designer watch, a quality belt, a tie-pin, and a selection of jewellery (rings are a great choice – just don’t overdo it!). These extras will boost the overall ensemble, and had that last touch of razamtaz!

If you have an upcoming event or special occasion just around the corner, take note of the tips in my latest guide, and you will be ready to roll and make a strong impression as soon as you head through the door.
