How To Avoid Accidents At The Gym
Hitting the gym is a popular pastime for the modern man. Whether it is to stay fit and healthy or to build a fantastic physique, the local fitness centre is typically packed with like-minded gents lifting weights and enjoying cardio sessions. However, there is an underlying concern that an injury is just around the corner. Let’s find out more in my latest lifestyle article.
Weightlifting and cardiovascular exercises are undoubtedly excellent activities for your health, body, and overall wellbeing, but if you are not careful, you can encounter an accident, which will not only set back your exercise goals but also potentially damage your everyday life (if an injury is severe, you need time off work).
Practice Correct Form
Bodybuilding, using either free weights or machines, is one of the main reasons men head to the local gym (as they will have a wide range of equipment to use, compared to what you will likely have at home). But often, guys (especially newcomers) will dive straight into lifting, swinging, and throwing weights around with aplomb without considering that you need to practice correct form to ensure you are targeting the muscles correctly, but also avoid injury.
If you are unsure, there is a vast amount of information online (including videos) that will show you how to perform each exercise correctly. Additionally, start at a lower weight initially so you can practice the motion slowly and smoothly, without swinging, and build up gradually as you get stronger while maintaining correct form going forward.
Alternatively, you can even request the help of a personal trainer to point you in the right direction; they will guide and teach you exactly how to practice each exercise safely and achieve the best results.
Know Your Limitations
It is important that you do not push yourself too hard too quickly – if you lift too heavy (before you are ready), you can face muscle strain and injuries (rotator cuff problems are very common – I myself have caused damage to my shoulder due to lifting heavier than I should have!). The same goes for cardio sessions – running too long without building up your resistance can sometimes cause exhaustion and cardiovascular damage.
Remember that your fitness training is not a “race”; you need to proceed at your own pace and listen to your body, avoiding any issues, and be sure to incorporate rest days into your routine to allow your body, muscles, and joints to rest between sessions.
Double-Check The Equipment Before Use
One thing many gym-goers fail to consider is the condition of the equipment they use. In older gyms, the kit could be years old, and these workhorse machines, bars, and plates have no doubt suffered knocks, bangs, and drops, which in turn have created flaws over time (which can then cause them not to work correctly or have loose bolts and screws). To avoid a disastrous situation, take a few minutes beforehand to check the gear, making sure everything is locked in place and moves smoothly.
How To Recover From An Injury
If you do experience a gym-related accident (and there is always that risk), then you need to change your focus and work on recovery (even though you will constantly think of the long-term setback).
Take time away from the gym to allow your body to recover, and when you do head back, take it slowly, reducing the weight or the time on the running machine until you are back at 100%.
However, sometimes (if the injury is unbearable), you may need to request professional help – from a trip to the doctors or hospital to get checked out. In worst-case scenarios, you may even need surgery to alleviate any problems. This itself features an array of issues, from a long time away from the gym (which is damaging physically but also mentally) to problems during the operation, leaving you with long-standing problems caused by incompetent medical staff. In this situation, you may even need to seek help and advice from medical negligence solicitors who can instruct you on the best course of action.
Final Thoughts
Exercise and fitness are surefire ways to keep yourself healthy and improve your body shape, boosting your confidence and wellbeing. Nevertheless, you need to be smart with your workout sessions – lift with correct form, don’t push yourself too quickly, and remember to give the gym equipment a once-over before use. These practices will ensure you have a successful fitness journey without unwanted incidents.
