There is no doubt that a white t-shirt is a fantastic companion piece for your closet; however, not all tees are created equal. To enjoy all the benefits of this vital style component, you must invest in a quality product – and this is where MIDIAundici steps in with their exclusive collection.

I have featured the brand on my blog previously in a number of articles (including a dedicated review of their T-Shirts – check here). They produce high-quality tops for the discerning gent, and this time I will be wearing the T6001 Stone Washed model in off-white. This tee has been constructed to the very highest standard using 100% Pima cotton (and it is gloriously soft too!) with a 150gsm weight, perfect for all weathers and seasons.

The overall fit is sublime, showing off your frame without appearing too loose (nor too tight). As this design has been pre-washed, every garment is entirely unique (which just adds to the charm of the tee).

As you can see in the images, I styled this tee ready for summer – vintage pair of Levi’s denim shorts (from the 90’s), minimalist low-profile sneakers (in matching white), and a variety of accessories, consisting of rings, a bracelet, an Omega Aqua Terra Watch, and my trusty Ray-Ban Aviator shades.

White T-Shirt Style Through History

The white t-shirt has been a popular trend for decades, even as far back as the 50s, fashionable guys have been rocking this simple yet effective piece of clothing. It is beyond question that Hollywood legends played a hand in its never-ending acclaim. From effortlessly cool James Dean to Marlon Brando and even John Travolta, all of these superstars slipped into a white tee and created a look that influenced men the world over.

There is something about the edgy simplicity of a well-fitted model worn with a pair of worn-in jeans and a leather jacket that displays an easy-going appearance which will always look good (and is very easy to replicate too – as long as you invest in a quality brand).

It just goes to show that even well-to-do movie stars will quickly abandon the overpriced designer-clothing excess in favour of a classic, to captivate fans (and this effect has shown to transcend time, as even now many guys are taking inspiration from these looks, decades later).

How To Style A White T-Shirt

One of the main benefits of a white t-shirt is its incredible versatility – do you want a casual ensemble with jeans and trainers? No problem. Smart casual worn under a button-down with boots? Sorted. Dressed up smarter with a pair of tailored trousers and loafers? You are fully covered.

In the next section, I will delve a little deeper into how you can pair this iconic number with your own fashionista goals.

Layering

Even though a fitted white t-shirt can easily stand alone, sometimes layering is a necessity (depending on the setting or the weather). One of the easiest options is to throw on a button-up shirt (partially undone to hint at an easy-going vibe) or a cardigan. Thanks to the tee’s neutral colourway, you can pretty much pair it with any layering piece, and it will always work.

For a shirt, you can opt for a plain colour (muted, bold, or even patterned). During the summer months, this pairing is ideal with a lightweight linen shirt (which can then be quickly removed if the temperature rises suddenly.

Alternatively, a cardigan (whether it’s a chunky model or a smarter merino design) can work together wonderfully – even though the knit will be the main focus of the look, the white t-shirt is the unsung hero of the outfit, working in the background to elevate its companion piece to the next level.

If a cardigan is ‘too much’, you can always dial it down with a slim knit v-jumper (in merino wool or sea island cotton), which still lets you show a hint of white fabric just below the neck.

Layering quick ideas –

  • Button-up shirt
  • Cardigan
  • Slim knitted jumper

Outerwear

For those occasions that call for outerwear (early spring, mid-autumn, or just a cooler summer evening), then a white t-shirt can function perfectly as the base layer, no matter whether you are considering a shacket (that unique mix of jacket and shirt), denim or bomber jacket, or the edgy and cool effect of a leather or suede jacket.
For the best look, select either a slim or regular fit (although slightly relaxed can work too!), with a hem length that sits just below the waistline – too short is a huge no-no, and too long can make your legs look short (especially from a distance).

A white tee is not just suitable for casual affairs; it can also work successfully in formal settings (within reason). One popular (and effective) option is to throw on a tailored blazer paired with smart jeans or trousers, which creates a fantastic smart-casual combo (ideal for events that call for a middle ground of formality).

Outerwear quick ideas –

  • Shacket
  • Denim jacket
  • Bomber jacket
  • Leather or Suede

Legwear

The versatility of white t-shirts offers multiple options for legwear. Perhaps you are trying to emulate that classic Hollywood effect with a pair of distressed stonewash denim jeans (although you can easily swap out with extreme black, or my personal favourite, grey), or fancy a preppy aesthetic with a clean, fitted pair of chinos (tucked can add an extra element of formality to the ensemble). Maybe you want to go full smart with tailored trousers (which can be boosted further with a fitted blazer) and a matching belt and shoes or trainers (more on footwear in the next section).

Legwear quick ideas –

  • Denim jeans (stonewash, distressed, black, or grey).
  • Smart chinos
  • Tailored trousers

Footwear

Depending on your overall outfit style, there are plenty of possibilities for your feet when pairing with a white t-shirt. For instance, on hotter days, you can slip into a pair of shorts (denim or chino) and grab your favourite low-profile sneakers or espadrilles. For mild weather, you can opt for Chelsea boots or your favourite designer trainers for an excellent match.

For those formal occasions, with trousers, chinos, or smarter dark denim, then hunt out your brogues or loafers (as long as your upper-body apparel is complementary – slim-knit, cardigan, or suit jacket).

Footwear quick ideas –

  • Low-profile sneakers
  • Smart designer trainers
  • Chelsea boots
  • Simple brogues
  • Loafers

Accessories

Now that your outfit is on point, you have one last step – accessorising! The simple effect of a plain tee can be easily elevated by adding a number of different extras. These can include a watch (either a luxury Swiss automatic, sports watch, or, if you are a tech-lover, a smart watch), and jewellery pieces such as rings, bracelets, and a necklace (which will drop nicely against the cotton fabric as a standout accessory).

Depending on the season, grab a pair of suitable sunglasses (my go-to is almost always aviator – remember to choose a model that suits your face shape and skin tone), and even a hat if necessary (baseball cap, beanine, or straw for those beach days).

Accessories quick ideas –

  • Luxury or sports watch
  • Jewellery (bracelets, rings, and necklaces)
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats (knitted beanie, baseball cap, or straw)

Looking After Your White T-Shirt

One thing to consider with white T-shirts is that they need a little extra love and care compared to their solid-coloured counterparts. You always need to consider dirt, grime, and stains – always pay attention to your surroundings (especially when you are out and about) and do not lean against walls, trees, or other potential threats to your bright white top! Another area of concern is your layering apparel – some shirts, jumpers, and jackets can sometimes transfer “colour” if they are vibrant or bold (this can be enhanced further if they get wet).

Washing / Drying / Storage

Next up, you need to be extra careful with washing your tee – only wash with other lighter colours (and preferably only other white items), otherwise you may end up with a top that looks a shade or two darker (or worse, pale pink, if washed with a bright red!). Once all washed and dried, be sure to neatly fold your tee (and this goes for all your clothing) and pack it away in a drawer (or even hang it up) till it’s time to wear it once more.

Another extra tip: before the next wear, it is advisable to iron (or even press) your tee to remove any unsightly creases, as they can ruin the overall clean, sleek aesthetic you are aiming to achieve. That said, when looking for a more rugged, casual vibe, a handful of minimal creases is more than acceptable.

Final Thoughts

The humble men’s white t-shirt has been rocking the fashion world since its inception, and this rollercoasting of style shows no sign of slowing down anytime soon (least of all stopping). The ultimate versatile clothing item that pairs with casual and formal looks alike (and everything in between). Just remember to look after your investment (especially a premium tee from MIDIundici) by keeping it clean, neat, and stored properly when not in use. If you are ever “stuck” trying to figure out what to wear, then pull on your beloved white tee as a base layer, and everything else will easily fall into place.
