Optima Curly Hair System Review
Hair systems for men are an effective solution for the damaging effects of hair loss for men – it is quick, budget-friendly, and almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Nonetheless, a lot of guys seem to opt for the same style (short, straight, or parted) when there are a number of alternative options available, such as a curly hair system, which is the focus of my latest article. However, I have finally gone back to my favourite hairstyle – curly. Over the past few years, I have chopped and changed between a short cut, longer (down to my eyebrows), or straight with a slight twist, but I always return to the curly style (it’s easier to maintain, and suits me better).
My previous model was the special Titanium system, which features a premium base (for extra longevity). In contrast, this replacement is the standard model (but, in my experience, it is still high quality and will last a respectable length of time if looked after with love and care).
In-House Perming
Optima traditionally ordered in ‘curly’ systems for you, which matched your natural hair and colour (and this method always worked for me in the past). But in some cases, how curly it arrived was never an exact science (sometimes super curly, and other times with only a subtle twist). The salon has now decided to change this up (for the better, I might add) by ordering in straight hair systems, and perming them in-house for each customer’s specific needs (in my case, I supplied photos of one of my favourite earlier curly systems, which they replicated perfectly).
Fitting
I am pretty much a veteran when it comes to hair system fittings (well over 7 years), so I know what to expect (and again, I shared the process in detail in the earlier article).
Dale was the man (my favourite stylist at Optima), removing my older model (peeling away from my head), cleaning away the glue, shaving my head (apart from the sides and back), and adding fresh adhesive (which is left to set, ready for the new system). Dale positioned my new system on my head, gently pressing down on the glue to ensure a sturdy fit. Now it’s time for the cutting and styling to begin.
Cut & Styling
The hair arrives extra long (practically covering my whole face), so that it can be trimmed to the exact style the client requires. I always aim to keep it a little longer, as after the first month there is a certain amount of additional bounce that lifts the front of the hair (so it’s always best to keep it longer initially, and it can be trimmed more on your next visit). Cutting curly hair is definitely much more difficult (fortunately Dale is skilled with his scissors!), and takes longer to complete.
Soon enough, my haircut was complete, and I am more than happy with the finished result (check the pics!) – super curly, a nice amount of bounce, great length, and the colour is spot on (slight blue tones instead of warm). I’m more than thrilled to have my curly hair style back! It’s been over a year, but it’s a great look, perfect for all seasons (and much easier to maintain!).
The Benefits Of Curly Hair
As mentioned above, I’ve always found a curly hair system much easier to work with – you can typically wake up each morning and be ready to leave without any need for additional styling (even if you sleep in all manner of positions), which is almost impossible for normal straight hair. Even during strong gusts of wind, your curls will hold firm (straight styles are more susceptible to the elements).
In certain circumstances, when your hair does need a little tweaking, it’s just a matter of splashing (or spraying) with water, a quick comb (a wide-tooth design is recommended), scrunching with your fingers, and your hair is back in action once more.
Nevertheless, despite the amazing benefits, there are a few negatives to be aware of. Knots are definitely something to be aware of. If they get too tight and bunched up, they can be very difficult to untangle (and you risk quickly losing hair strands, reducing the system’s lifespan). Additionally, it can be more challenging to style the system yourself (at least to get it looking as good as the stylists can), but that is all down to practice.
Final Thoughts
If you are already a user of hair systems or are considering heading down that route (if you are currently experiencing hair loss), you may want to consider a curly hair system. Even if your natural hair is/was straight (my own natural hair was always on the ‘straighter’ side), you may find that it suits your face shape and personal aesthetic much better than what you were born with! It’s all about experimenting and seeing what works for you (after all, one of the advantages of hair systems is that you can change them whenever you feel like a change).
