How To Transform The Appearance Of Your Yard
Your yard is one of the first things people notice when approaching your property, so it is understandable that it needs to make a great first impression. Its appearance can quickly deteriorate if left to its own devices (such as overgrown grass, plants, gardening tools strewn across pathways, or a buildup of weeds). Fortunately, with good organisation and planning, you can change it for the better. In my latest guide, I will offer a variety of tips and tricks. Continue reading for more.
Uneven Ground And Slopes
Not every backyard has a flat, open layout. Many homes, by contrast, have a sloping garden design (which can make activities far more challenging and leave different sections disconnected from each other). However, you need to view these features as a positive (not a downside) and consider how to incorporate them into your design ideas.
Depending on the slope and site conditions, you can build a section of elevated pathways and terraced planting structures (basically, something that is actually “usable”).
For a gentle slope, you may only need a variety of plants, paired with a well-positioned path. On the other hand, steeper ground may demand a more substantial solution. For instance, retaining wall options are an excellent way to hold soil in place, level areas for seating, or even just make an uneven yard a lot more structured.
You can also integrate a variety of different materials depending on your personal style and suitability (such as the overall height of the wall), including natural stone, timber, or concrete blocks. A retaining wall offers far more than just a visual appeal; it can also be a useful method to drain out a buildup of water in the garden (especially after a large bout of rain).
Do You Have A Plan?
Before you run out and splash out on more plants, new outdoor furniture, and decorative bits and pieces, head outside and evaluate how your garden looks right now.
Consider what already looks good, and what could be improved. For instance, is your garden filled with sun with very little shade? Or is your patio area mostly unused as it is devoid of anything beyond the concrete slabs?
Think about how you want to use the space and make a note –
- A family area for families with young children who can use the open area to play.
- If entertaining friends or colleagues, you will need comfortable seating and atmospheric lighting (or even a table for alfresco dinner parties).
- For keen gardeners, you may add a planting area or raised flower bed structures.
Whatever you decide, you always need to think about maintenance. A garden full of delicate plants and well-pruned hedges can be very attractive, but if you have a regularly busy schedule, it may be difficult to keep up with the required maintenance.
In many respects, it may be far easier to have a garden that looks great long after the initial work is done and requires little upkeep (both for time and financially). Once you’ve established your priorities, then the project can be broken down into manageable stages. Start with the layout first, then follow with drainage, and lastly work on the decorative aesthetics.
You Need A Cosy Place To Sit
Your yard will be much more enjoyable if you have somewhere to sit, relax, and spend your free time. A small seating area can make all the difference, whether it’s a bench installation under a tree, a pair of comfortable chairs on the patio, or a dining table near the back door (for easy access to the kitchen for snacks and the fridge for chilled drinks).
However, the best spot will generally depend on how you’re going to use the space – will it be for reading a good book? Tucking into lunch in the open air? Or just sitting back and watching the world go by?
You will also need to take into account the outdoor elements. For example, the position of the sun throughout the day, the prevailing winds, the level of privacy you require, and how far you are from the adjacent properties. Match your personal needs to the type of outdoor furniture you want and whether it is appropriate to the typical weather conditions.
Final Thoughts
Transforming your yard doesn’t need a huge overall change (unless the garden is in dire straits and requires a complete makeover!). All you need to do is make a couple of effective tweaks, and soon you will have an exterior that looks visually flattering, inviting, and functional for relaxation and social gatherings.
