1 Could you tell me more about your brand, REAL?
Sure. REAL is a British brand of menswear, making performance-led clothing (reviewed here). We combine luxury and advanced materials to make precise and considered sportswear.
2 What inspired you to create your own sportswear brand?
Great question. I’ve always felt like a kid in a sweet shop when in a sports store. I get inspired to move and activate when I see sportswear.
From my firsthand experience with boxing, I wanted to create something that catered to unrestrained movement and dealt with my torrential sweat, allowing me to remain comfortable over any distance or duration.
Boxing was, and still is, booming from a recreational perspective, and I wanted to create a product that didn’t exist to stand up to the duress of boxing. The inspiration from boxing was always to create something comfortable and technically brilliant, but to be used for everything and anything intensive.
3 Will you be expanding your products in the future?
Absolutely. We are always in the development phase behind the scenes, testing new styles and rigour-testing materials.
We are currently developing a collaborative capsule collection with another brand and sampling for a new style of shorts, but we’ll shout about it all in more detail publicly, soon.
4 What is your most popular item(s) from your collection?
Our Flyweight 2:0 tee. It is available in x4 colours.
It weighs about 100g and it is wonderfully easy material, ensuring it remains minimally light and maximally breathable under duress. Runners love it for long-distance events, for example, as it doesn’t cling and stays impeccably light and comfortable.
5 How did you decide on the name REAL for your brand?
In a noisy world full of distractions, I have always found peace in movement. Our narrative is anchored in the meditative state we find ourselves in when we move. When the body is busy – the mind is empty.
This is when I feel free, and this is REAL.
6 What exciting products do you have coming soon?
The soonest thing to market this year is likely to be some socks and a new style of training shorts.
7 Finally, is there anything you would like to add?
We are inspired by boxers. That is to say that we make performance pieces that can stand up to the rigour of unrestrained movement, and that our meditative narrative is inspired by the focus of boxers, who have a calm indifference to hard things.
