Throughout the last century, there is no doubt that running shoes gained popularity during sports, initially for running (hence the name) but also for other activities too, such as tennis and basketball. As time progressed and styles changed, running footwear started to be worn out of the sporting arena and paired with daytime outfits. To this day, sporty style sneakers are undeniably popular in the fashion world, with even designers sending them down the catwalk runway.

Currently, the difference between running shoes and designer sneakers is subtle but enough to ensure that both have their pros and cons, depending on what you are looking for in your next footwear acquisition.

Running Shoes

If you grab a new pair of running shoes, the benefits over designer sneakers are extensive. Typically, sporty style shoes will offer various comfort-based benefits such as extra cushioning, particularly for running, jumping and landing (allowing the sole of your feet to be well protected). Running shoes are often designed more for practicality and boast a standout style, typically with bright and vibrant colours and different fabrics such as rubber and mesh. However, although much of the construction is based on sports functionality, running shoes can still be rocked outside for that street-style look!

Designer Sneakers

Fashion trainers are undoubtedly styled for a different market; many will feature a few standout design features (patterns, prints and logos) but are typically understated. Premium sneakers can be worn with a casual outfit (hoodies and joggers) along with something more urban, such as skinny jeans and a stylish T-shirt. As designer sneakers are created for style, it is usually unlikely they will share running shoe benefits such as extra padding and cushioning; in fact, in my experience, many designer trainers are sometimes uncomfortable to wear for long periods! But then, I have made peace with this aspect, as I would be snagging a pair for their appearance rather than the comfort factor.

When looking for a new pair of sporty shoes, which will you choose? The comfortable and work-horse running shoes or the much more stylish yet often uncomfortable designer sneakers? I think you will already have decided depending on what you are looking for in a new pair of shoes.
