Wide Fit Shoes – New Balance 880 Review
Men’s footwear is one of the most important parts of any outfit, often the final piece of the style puzzle. However, sometimes, no matter what sneakers or shoes you buy, they are just uncomfortable to wear. Many men suffer from problem feet and need shoes with a wider fit to alleviate any issues. With this in mind, in my latest review, I will be checking out a pair of trainers from Wide Fit Shoes to find out more!

I have owned more than a few pairs of designer sneakers, stylish shoes, and fancy boots, and they can often cause issues during daily wear. It can sometimes be a brand issue (it is no secret that many designer shoes are painful to wear!), but even so-called comfy trainers (from the big brands) can be uncomfortable.
After some searching, I came across the brand Wide Fit Shoes, whose range is entirely based on offering shoes and sneakers with a wider fit for those who suffer from problematic feet.
Here is a list of foot problems that they offer support for –
- Swollen insteps
- Swollen ankles
- Bunions
- Diabetes
- Arthritis
- Corns
- Gout
- Problem feet
- Sore feet
The Wide Fit Shoes brand launched in 1965 and has extensive experience dealing with customers and clients who suffer from foot issues, including referrals from orthopaedic hospitals, podiatrists, foot clinics, general health clinics, and doctors’ surgeries.
Each shoe has been designed for extra comfort by offering extras that include seam-free soft padded leather uppers, large toe box areas that give height and width to the fit, and removable socks that allow for the insertion of orthotic devices. Additionally, you can even pop into the actual store and discuss any issues and concerns you have with the expert staff, who can offer you help and suggestions.
For the purpose of the review, I selected a pair of New Balance Classic 880 Walking Trainers (in wide fit) so I could truly understand the comfort levels offered by Wide-Fit Shoes.
Style & Design
New Balance is undoubtedly one of the world’s leading players in sports footwear, and after checking out this classic 880 model, it is easy to see why. The sneakers have been designed with a warm grey colourway that blends with darker grey sections and a white sole (the ‘N’ logo uses a thin line of orange as a border).
The shape is sleek and streamlined, with a suede upper and mesh section for breathability and Walking Strike Path technology in the chunky sole for extra support.
These 880 trainers certainly look the part—far more than just a ‘comfort’ shoe. You would be more than happy to rock these with any number of fashionable outfits. My style tip is to pair the sneakers with black skinny jeans and a matching grey jacket or hoodie (or pink for a bold look!) for an excellent street-style ensemble.
Comfort & Wearability
After trying on seemingly hundreds of pairs of shoes in my time (with varying degrees of success for comfort), I can 100% state that these New Balance sit high on the list! The extra space (thanks to Wide Fit Shoes) is a significant game-changer, allowing my feet to ‘spread out’ inside the trainer, rather than squashed and tight (often resulting in rubbing).
The trainers themselves are lightweight, which aids comfort, as they are not heavy and bulky when you walk. You could happily wear these all day without discomfort or pain—perfect for work, travel, fitness, or casual days out. The bonus of the wide-fit construction is undoubtedly an incredible addition. If you have ever suffered from problematic feet, these New Balance will turn your world upside down (for the better!).
Sizing
Wide Fit Shoes offers a fantastic selection of sizing options. You start with your ‘normal’ size, which ranges from 5.5 to 11.5, and then you additionally select your ‘width’ (which was something new for me). The New Balance is available in 2E or 4E, which correlates to wide or ultra-wide.
Wide Fit Shoes actually offers a far more extensive choice (depending on the brand), all the way up to 8E (the widest available), depending on your condition and preference.
For my size choice, I opted for 8.5 (my standard size) and selected 2E (as I just required a minimal width increase for comfort). This size was a great choice; they fitted perfectly, and the extra width gave me that extra tier of comfortability!
Construction
New Balance is one of the top sports brands in the world; as such, you will appreciate that the craftsmanship for these 880 trainers will be impeccable (and you’d be correct!). Their sneakers are assembled to a very high quality, with no flaws or loose threads (or poorly cut plastic on the shoe).
Additionally, thanks to the extra features from Wide Fit Shoes, this is boosted even further—each pair includes a removable insole, allowing you to insert your own orthotics if you need that extra level of foot comfort.
Packaging
The shoes arrived in a well-protected parcel (with fast shipping). Inside was the traditional New Balance box, which is in a bold red and white colourway. The box features the model and sizing details along the side (with additional ‘Wide Fit’). The trainers inside are wrapped in tissue paper for protection, along with paper inserts to keep the shape and structure intact.
Value For Money
If you suffer from troublesome feet, you will understand that finding comfortable shoes can sometimes be like searching for hen’s teeth! (In other words, an impossible task.) So, spending money to keep your feet comfortable is a no-brainer.
That said, these New Balance shoes are more than reasonably priced. You are getting a quality product from a world-renowned brand that looks stylish and extremely comfortable, especially if you need a wide-fitting trainer.
Overall
If you are hunting for shoes or trainers that are comfortable for your problem feet, you can finally stop your search. Wide Fit Shoes offers a tremendous selection of styles and types to help you alleviate any problems with your feet. The New Balance 880 takes this one step further by providing all the comfort with a fantastic cool fashion style, too! What more could you ask for?
