Boda Skins Kay Michaels Men’s Leather Jacket Review

Boda Skins Kay Michaels Men’s Leather Jacket Review

It’s time for another review on my mens fashion blog, so for my latest entry I will be looking at the Mens Boda Skins Kay Michaels Leather Jacket in Black. I got it a few months ago and have been loving it!

I have owned the Antique Creased Brown version in my collection for almost a year now (reviewed here) yet I was never 100% satisfied, not because of any negatives with the jacket, but because the black model was always looming in the background, tempting and teasing me! I originally opted for the brown because it was a limited run and that I’ve always preferred tan coloured leathers. But as the year progressed, I couldn’t help but be drawn to the classic black model. Finally, all of my defences were broken down and I made the purchase! But was it the correct decision? Find out in my review!

Design & Style

The Boda Skins Kay Michaels Leather Jackets have based their design on the classic biker style, something which is seemingly timeless. Ever since biker jackets were first created they have gained legions of fans throughout each passing decade. The Boda Skins team are no fools, adopting this same classic look for their flagship piece, yet adding their own unique additions and details. The most easily noticeable feature is the heavily padded upper arm sleeves, this is what easily sets them apart from rival brands and also what makes Boda Skins jackets instantly recognisable and so attractive to look at! The black leather looks deliciously expensive, almost a matte colour rather then the deep and dark (and sometimes shiny!) leathers usually on offer.

Leather & Details

As mentioned, the leather looks high end, but upon touching, it feels expensive too! Incredibly soft and supple, particularly the iconic arm padding and the overall feel of the fabric. Fortunately the leather doesn’t have the side effect of being delicate, worrying about damaging your newly acquired jacket can play havoc with your outfit choices!

The jacket is covered in little details, Boda Skins logo branded studs, quality zippers with made to last pullers, an internal iPhone pocket, and the unobtrusive English flag patch on one of the arms. These little subtleties are what reassures you that you are witness to a quality product!

Comfort and Wearabilty

Biker leather jackets are an iconic style, one of the few types of clothing which complements almost anything in your wardrobe, the Boda Skins Kay Michaels is no different. Paired dressed down with distressed skinny jeans and sneakers and a crisp white T Shirt or slung over the top of your smart shirt and tie, creating an eye catching combo. Thankfully when it comes to regular wear, this jacket pretty much nails it. With its internal soft padding and buttery feeling leather, you won’t ever feel uncomfortable. It’s a jacket that I can happily wear all day and not feel too restricted.

The Sizing

I chose my normal size of a XS for this Boda Skins jacket (the exact same as my Brown Version) and it boasts an exceptional fit, nice and snug in the arms and shoulder area (without constriction). The sleeve lengths are close to perfect, suitably sitting across my wrists. Compared to other rival brands (like my Allsaints Cargo), the fit of the Kay Michaels jacket is just how an XS should fit. Top marks from me in this section! Regarding the length of it, it also comes in a tall version if you’re on the taller side (see here).

Price & Value For Money

The price of the Boda Skins jackets are very close to stepping into the designer brand price bracket, with yearly increases (just like all brands), this gap will only get smaller. However, despite its admittedly big price tag of £459, I strongly believe this jacket is worth every penny. Smashing past its similarly priced competitors as it’s made to last and comes with a 100 year guarentee.

My Summary

My opinion of this jacket was always going to be a foregone conclusion (after all, I already highly rate the brown model!). Excellent style and design, super soft leather, perfect fit and just beautiful to look at! This leather jacket is one of the best available, it’s no surprise the brand is going from strength to strength! The Kay Michaels has become iconic now and one of the most beautifully designed leather jackets I’ve seen, especially with all the quilting and zip detailing.

What do you think of this leather jacket? Is it something you would wear? Please let me know in the comments below! I can also help with sizing and comparisons if you need it.

    Hi!
You said that you got the XS(UK) right?
I was thinking about getting the M(UK) according to fhe size-guide, but seeing you on the post, maybe an S(UK) would have a more fitted look…
Sorry, but how tall are you?
    Thanks!

      Hi there,

Yeah, I got an XS UK size. They are quite slim fit though, particularly in the arms. my height is around 5’9″

      Thanks.

I’d just like to add that if you want to wear a hoodie underneath say the “Dragon hoodie 2.0” from Boda skins then you will need to go up a size higher then you would normally else it’s just t-shirts that will fit.

Hi I am looking to buy the same boda jacket but looking at the sizing I am not sure what to get I am a 44.5 chest so as the XL is a 44 inch chest I was thinking of going for the XXL which is a 46 inch chest however I know the leather will give by 10% and I like them fitted

    What would you suggest?

Hey Wayne, honestly since I’ve owned the jacket it hasn’t really stretched at all! I haven’t worn it a massive amount of times, but as a comparison, my Allsaints Cargo has stretched a lot for the same amount of wears. But then on the flipside, these jackets are quite slim, particularly in the arms and shoulder area. Is it an option to order both and return one?

Yes I could do that I train a bit so shoulders and arms are areas which could be tight. Are they aimed for guys who workout? I will see if they can accept one back when I get them

        Thanks

Yeah, it is the shoulder and arm area which is the tightest part. They should allow you to return them. I have seen plenty of fitness guys who do wear their jackets though, it’s just trying to get the correct one!

I am a 44 inch chest and I couldn’t get into an XL I went XXL and even then the arms are very snug and I can just about do it up. An XL I’m guessing would be too small for you especially if you wanted to wear anything other than a t-shirt underneath.

Regarding the bordeaux version, usually if they are gone from site, then it’s no longer available. You can always check eBay? Sometimes they do have pop up shops, when they sell a bunch of older stuff.

In US my leather jacket size is typically M. Would that mean that in UK sizing I would be S? I like the jacket to be slim fitting, but I also like being able to wear a hoody underneath it sometimes. Just trying to find my best size to order

Hi Matt, looking at their website, they do recommend a US M is a UK S.
But they are very slim, particularly in the arms, anything thicker than a T-Shirt and I probably wouldn’t be able to get the jacket on! Maybe if you plan on mostly wearing hoodies or sweaters, you may need to size up one?

  6. September 20, 2018 / 1:22 pm

I cannot agree with you more!… I absolutely love both my Kay Michaels jackets!…. classic motorcycle (gold hardware) and the Queens Guard (black hardware). Both fitting exactly to size (38) I have been stopped dozens of time asking me about my jackets, and tell each one of the admirers where to find and get one of their own!… Thank you for your great review as well!… Cheers mate!?…. btw.. if anyone has the opportunity to go a Bodaskins “pop-up”… I highly suggest going… fun to try on the entire collection!

    Hi Adam,

Great review, I am planning on buying this leather jacket, but am unsure about the size.
I am 5’10”, chest is around 37-38, slim build, should I be getting XS or S?
Will S be too big and length of sleeves be a lot longer than XS? Thx!

      Hey Steven, thank you!

You sound a similar size to me and I like the slim fit of the XS, however I can pretty much only wear a T-Shirt with it (especially because of the arms and shoulders part of the jacket).

Usually an increase in size in clothing will give you a slight increase in sleeve length too.

    Hi Adam,

I am about to pull the trigger on this jacket (thanks to your excellent review 🙂 )
One question.. are you able to zip up the jacket? I guess you probably could but would be very snugged / tight, correct?

I probably won’t be zipping up that often as it’s cooler to wear it open.. but just curious, thx

Hi 🙂 Glad you liked my review! Sorry I missed your comment before, it went in spam.

I can zip it up, but as you said, it’s very tight, so it’s not very comfortable. I find that leather biker jackets look better undone anyway! Do you have any other questions?

        Hi Adam,

I just bought this jacket in size XS.
I think it fits good, but am concerned that the jacket may look too short on me.
Does this jacket fit a little shorter than all Saints cargo (I have that one in XS as well)?
Do you mind if i send you a few pictures for your suggestion? I highly value ur opinion when it comes to fashion :). Thx!

Hi Bryan, difficult to say, it would depend how long your torso is. I’m around 5,9 and it sits nicely at my waist level.

    Hi, greetings from france 🙂

Nice review about this beautiful jacket.
I’m about to order one kay michael and one royale.

I read you are around 5.9 wich seems to be near 1m80 ( metric ) and wear an XS.
I’m a small guy lol, around 1m70 and pretty thin ( athletic though )
As you seem to be 10cm higher than me, should i be worried about even the XS too large for me ?
I’ve seen other reviews from guy of my size wearing an S size, so pretty confused 🙂
My shoulder are weirdly large lol ( genetics )

    Thanks for your feedback

      Hey there!

Thanks for your message, I think an XS will be ok for you. On me it is quite tight around the arms and also the shoulders, quite a tight fit to fit anything other than a thin T-Shirt underneath. So on the slim chance it fits a little big on you, wearing a slightly thicker jumper or sweater will pack it out enough I’m sure 🙂

I have heard of others sizing up … but again, this can depend on your frame and also how you like your clothes to fit 🙂

As you have big shoulders I should think you will be ok with an XS 🙂

Hi Adam. I’m thinking of buying the Kay Michael jacket but really can’t decide on which size to go for, so many different opinions. Wondering if you could help? I’m 5.7 and I wear a 38 inch slim fit suit jacket with around a 30 inch waist. I normally wear a small jacket in most brands apart from all saints in which I wear an extra small. I definitely prefer the more fitted look. Any suggestions? Thanks. Matt.

Hi Matt, If you wear an XS in AllSaints then I would suggest an XS in the Boda as well. I wear XS in AllSaints – Cargo, Conroy leather jackets and their overcoats.
The XS in the Boda is a lot slimmer than anything I have in AS though, particularly the arms, I can only wear a T-Shirt or thin jumper underneath and I wouldn’t really be able to zip it up easily … however, I believe an S would have looked sloppy on me.

But, the one thing that concerns me is you say your a 38 in suit jackets, that would be too large for me as I generally opt for a 36 or sometimes even a 34 (depending on the brand and cut), so maybe a S might be better. Is there any option for you to order both sizes and return the one?

            May 28, 2019 / 9:51 am

Hi Adam, that helps. I will probably go for the small after your advise. I can sometimes get away with wearing a 40 in chest suit jacket. My only concern is the arms, I don’t have particularly long arms, and I’m only about 5.7.

Hi Adam. Thank you very much for your advice. It really helped. So I went for the small and it fits perfectly apart from the arms being slightly longer than I would like, but definitely not to the extent where it actually botheres me. I think the x small would have definitely been too small for me, apart from the length of the sleeves which would probably have been spot on. Thanks again. Matt

That is the trouble with sleeves on some jackets, I have a similar issue with AllSaints.

    Hi Adam
many thanks for your post and your experience with Boda.
What an amazing jacket, I really love this design and style and it looks really luxury and even sexy.
So I’m also thinking to purchase a BODA, the Kay Michaels or even The Alexander, which looks also really amazing and nice – one of the best looking leather jackets on the market, I love this kind of biker style!!!
May I ask you some points?

What is your favourite style wearing this jacket?
I really love street wear with skinny Jeans and damaged look, combined with T-shirt, also long shirts with any kind of sneaker
The BODA should fit perfectly to this style. But also in combination with “nice” trousers and tie the boda should fit very well.
    Do you think so?

    Best Regards from Cologne

Hi Max, happy you like my blog post!

For me, I generally wear my Boda as a street style (as you described), with skinny jeans and either chelsea boots or low top sneakers. I’ve personally never worn them smarter, however I’m sure it could work!

    Hi Adam,

thanks for your response. Yes I like your blog about this amazing leather jacket – the best style I ever have seen!!
Very nice to read that you also combine your Boda with skinny Jeans and chelsa boots or low top sneakers – it looks really amazing good and I love this style!!

So I’m really thinking to purchase the Kay Michaels – or the The Alexander model, which is very similar.
There is just The Alexander model in summer sale with 20% Discount.
What do you think about The Alexander model? Do you also like it?

What do you think about sizing?
In my opinion the best fit for a Boda schould be very slim fit as a 2nd skin – this looks really good.
My normal size is L – so I should also order size L?

I agree with you that the best look is to wear the Boda open – but for more cold weather conditions it should be possible for me fully to zip up the jacket – I hope this will be possible at least using the 2nd zip.

How often do you wear your Boda? Do you use the Boda as “every days” jacket also at worse weather conditions and do you have experience with rainy weather conditions? Do you think the leather will be affected by becomig wet? So is it robust or rather sensitive?
This would be important for me because I like to wear my leather jacket at any weather.

Hey Max, I do like the Alexander model as well, but I do think the Kay Michaels just beats it with its classic style!

In terms of sizing, my Boda is very snug and I did pick the smallest size for me (XS) and it was definitely the right choice, plus when it stretches (as leather inevitably will) then it will ensure it still looks good.

When it comes to zipping the jacket, I could do it up, but only just about and it would not look very attractive! So for me, I always wear it open, besides it enables people to see my layers.

To be honest, I don’t wear my Boda that regularly, although I have worn it many times since its purchase. I do try and avoid wearing it in the rain, especially heavy rain just to be on the safe side!

      Hi Julien,

You have similar sizes and weight to me (perhaps I am just slightly taller) and I wear an XS for a nice fitted look, so I would recommend the XS.
The sleeves are also more or less perfect for me, sitting on the wrists, I think an S would then make the sleeves a touch too long.

      Hope that helps!

I don’t know if I’m too late for this post.
I’m 6 feet 4 inches, my chest is 41 and my waist is 34. I just purchased the M Tall Man size, do you think that would fit me ok? They’re discontinuing this line so that’s I rushed in to grab one 🙂 Their sales reps said would fit me ok

Hey! They are nice jackets, definitely a good call to grab one beforehand (didn’t know they were being discontinued though!).

Sizing, my XS fits kinda snug (can only wear with a t-shirt / slim jumper or knit and I’m around a 36 chest, so based on that I think an M should be ok! (tall should be good too, I’m 5 9 and the standard fits me just right).

      Hope this helps!
