Return Of The Short Shorts? How Men’s Workout Fashion Is Changing In 2026

Men’s workout fashion is currently experiencing a shift. Only a few years ago, the goal was all about comfort and sweat absorption. The big sportswear brands (such as Nike and Adidas) launched collections that heavily featured loose, baggy styles – basketball vests and drawstring sweatpants were the order of the day. However, things are quickly changing; while comfort still matters, men’s workout style is increasingly about personal expression and body positivity. So let’s take a closer look to find out more.

The Short Shorts Resurgence

If you look hard enough, you will discover (stashed deep) within your dad’s or granddad’s wardrobe – the short shorts. Once upon a time, they were a staple of 1980s athletic wear, worn by footballers, runners, and gym enthusiasts alike. These gave way in the 90s to longer, looser shorts, and the hip-high shorts of the past became the target of heavy ridicule over the subsequent decades.

But nothing in fashion is forever, including being out of fashion – as such, men’s sports shorts are now poised to make a triumphant comeback! A need for better airflow and greater ease of movement partly drives this change.

A less talked-about benefit (although no less important) of the rise of the hemlines of men’s running shorts is that you can show off the results of leg day at the gym, on the beach, or even during an impromptu shopping trip (if you are running low on essentials after your workout).

Gym-To-Home

Sportswear is increasingly transforming into clothing that can double as everyday wear – partly due to the general rise in the popularity of activewear (although the Covid pandemic also had a significant impact). Many guys quickly got used to being comfortable in their casual wear during the lockdowns and were reluctant to return to a life that demanded constant outfit changes.

Brands have now responded with sportswear pieces which were designed to blend seamlessly into a range of environments – you can now easily head from the gym to the coffee shop in a minimalist, versatile workout outfit without the need to change your clothing (although if you are sweaty after a heavy workout, you probably should – it’s just polite!).

Structured Silhouettes

Baggy (and often saggy) gym wear is steadily being replaced with compression and hybrid fits, boasting sharper lines and closer tailoring. Do not get me wrong, skintight leotards are not mainstream appropriate just yet (although you will more than likely see plenty of those outfits at the gym!), but fitness wear is generally looking smarter, more tailored, and more structured than it ever used to be.

However, by ‘structured’ I do not mean ‘restrictive’ – the design of 2026 workout clothing is built to work with, rather than against your body. Compression panels and adaptive materials can help you work out for longer while also allowing you to move more freely than with older-style baggy pieces.

Individual Expression Over Uniform Sets

As men’s fitness gear evolves, it is now far more rare to see full gym outfits sold in sets. Instead, you will find a range of tops, shorts, hoodies, and jackets available separately, so you can mix and match to suit your preferences. In general, this reflects an evolution in how we view sportswear. Rather than functional gymwear you wear for your exercise session and throw straight into the washing machine once you are home, we are increasingly using sportswear to express our unique style and personalities.

Individuality, Tailoring, And Hip-High Short Shorts

In summary, 2026 is seeing a resurgence of men’s sportswear as expressive, stylish, and even fun to wear! A far cry from just simply functional garments to wear during your workout regime. The growing gym culture is undoubtedly partly responsible for this – we want to wear clothes that look and feel good after long hours working out (while also allowing us to show off our ‘gains’).

Short shorts are part and parcel of all of this (personally, I’m a fan, especially on holiday!) – but will you be wearing them? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below.
