What Are The Subtle Signs That Your Eyes Are Tired?

If you are a hardworking go-getter, you may have encountered eye strain while pursuing your career goals. It can creep up on you suddenly, causing your temples to throb with the added pressure and blurring your vision. In my latest article, I will explore the various signs that your eyes are tired and how to protect yourself. Carry on reading for more.

Throughout modern life, there are a number of areas that can easily affect your vision (and no amount of coffee will help the issue!)—whether it is blue light exposure from your laptop, TV, or even one of the many smart devices (from phones to fridges!), your eyes will barely catch a break.

Many of us will not even realise that eye strain is happening before it is well into the advanced stages (and you are squinting to read the smallest of text). Your eyes will be begging for mercy, hoping to rest and recover before being forced into use once more!

Eye Strain Headaches

These types of headaches are unmistakable, dull, heavy, and settle right between the eyes (like an uninvited guest who won’t leave!). They make everything harder—from reading emails to even a simple conversation (making them far more irritating than they should be).

You may try to reassure yourself that you didn’t sleep well, the air is too dry, or the lighting is bright. These individual things will naturally add to the problem, but your eyes are the real culprits, quietly overworked but highly under-supported.

Our eyes are undoubtedly fantastic creations. However, they are not built for a hectic modern lifestyle of browsing multiple tabs, having a Zoom meeting, and checking into that group chat, all within the space of a fast minute! Fortunately, for the most part, your eyes won’t be damaged long-term, but it is a practice that you need to reduce.

The Negative Effects Of Squinting

Many of us will very likely not realise they are squinting, it is something that happens naturally. As you are reading the fine print on a variety of grooming products or skimming subtitles as they quickly flash onto the screen, your eyes will start to narrow, attempting to sharpen the readability of that important text.

One option is to invest in eyewear (with your unique prescription) such as varifocal glasses (which allow you to see all distances effectively) or even contact lenses (which I use religiously). If you do not require glasses, then you need to actively be aware of if you are ‘squinting’ – relax your eyes, and if necessary, move closer to the text so you can read it clearly.

The Afternoon Blur

The day will typically start out crisp and clear, but everything will invariably become a little hazy as the day goes on. Normal day-to-day activities (such as reading) will feel like a chore. You will catch yourself rubbing your eyes, wondering if it’s time for another coffee! (But more often than not, it will be your eyes waving the white flag of surrender).

Fortunately, to fix the problem, you don’t necessarily need a full lifestyle overhaul—even a quick walk in the open air, changing your lighting, or even a much-needed break away from the screen (and that means not switching over to your smartphone!) will often be more than enough to reduce eye strain, ensuring a more enjoyable and comfortable experience during your day.
