How To Start Exercising When Worried About Joining A Gym

There is no doubt that more and more men are jumping on the fitness bandwagon, but the initial start can be a huge stumbling block. If it is your first time at a public gym, it can be an overwhelming experience – surrounded by huge machines (and even bigger bodybuilding veterans!). In my latest lifestyle article, I will share a few handy tips to help you begin your workout journey with newfound confidence.

For guys with a busy lifestyle, it is essential to make time to stay active and healthy. If you are lucky enough to have space at home to build your own gym with the right equipment you need (one of the main benefits of which is that you do not need to wait to do your next exercises), then you are already ahead of the game.

However, most men will instead sign up with a local gym, which can lead to worry (and even dread) as you fill your head with negative scenarios! Social media (despite its positives) has escalated this factor even further, as there is now an expectation that men should know how to lift, understand how the machines work, and practice 100% perfect form with free weights.

The Fear Of Being Filmed At The Gym

Long before the advent of smartphones and social media, the worst-case gym worry was a random accident – dropping weights, tripping on a treadmill, or spilling your protein shake all over the floor! In our modern age, a new issue has emerged – your personal workouts can be secretly filmed and posted online for strangers to view.

You can easily discover a variety of “gym fails” on YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok that have been created to judge, criticise, or just ridicule. This aspect has ruined personal fitness journeys for many people out of fear. Fortunately, many gyms have now taken action and banned phones, camera equipment and even Meta glasses, and you need to keep your tech safely locked away in your locker.

Not Knowing What To Do Is Normal

If you are a gym newbie, it is more than likely that you will make mistakes – not knowing where to start, using unsuitable exercises, or having poor form. Most people have just used online tutorials as a basis for their knowledge (which has its uses), but without an expert actively helping you during the initial phases, it can be a slow start towards the right path. Booking a personal trainer can be an effective option for beginners, as they will be able to teach you tricks of the trade, offer support and advice (both at the gym and for nutrition), and you can even employ them to help you throughout your entire journey.

Choose The Gym Carefully, Because The Crowd Does Matter

Something else to keep in mind is your choice of gym (which can be crucial to your whole experience). Many establishments are loud, crowded, mirror-heavy, and full of content creators setting up tripods to film their workouts (often catching other gym-goers in shot, whether they like it or not). On the other hand, there are alternatives that are much smaller, calmer, and more private, and there is no evidence of members treating it like their own personal video studio. If you are anxious about starting your workout plan, the overall environment can make a huge difference. Other great ideas include training during off-peak hours or taking advantage of a private training space (if your gym offers this facility).

Nevertheless, you also need to review the equipment the gym has available – do they have enough machines during busy hours? Are there free weights available? Can you perform cardio sessions? All of these factors need to be considered before you sign on the dotted line for a subscription.

Everyone Was A Beginner Once

Just remember that everyone has to start somewhere – it is totally ok to start slow, practice the movements and your form at a lower rate, your journey is yours, and yours alone. Find a gym that you like and works for your needs, and employ a personal trainer if you need the extra help. Alternatively, invest in your home gym equipment, which can allow you to reach your body goals without limitations. The choice is yours!
