How To Design The Dream Home Office
Working from home sounds like a fantastic opportunity, until you find yourself hunched over your laptop on the kitchen table for the fifth day in a row, with a bad back and zero motivation! Does this sound all too familiar? In my latest article, I will guide you on creating a home setup that genuinely changes how you feel about your workday. Carry on reading to find out more.
Start With The Right Space
First things first – where are you actually going to set up? After all, not everyone has a spare bedroom to convert into an office (and that’s totally fine). A corner of your living room, a nook under the stairs, or even a well-organised bedroom desk can work brilliantly with the right setup.
The key is to pick a spot that feels separate from the rest of your home life – your brain needs to differentiate when it’s in “work mode” and when it’s not. Having a dedicated space, even a small one, makes that mental switch a whole lot easier.
Natural light is your best friend – position your desk near a window (if possible), as it can make a huge difference to your energy levels throughout the day while also reducing eye strain from staring at the screen for long hours.
Invest In A Decent Office Chair (Seriously)
This is the one area where you absolutely should not cut corners – a good office chair is arguably the most important purchase you can make for your home setup. Most people underestimate just how much time they spend sitting down.
If you are working full time from home, that could be for between 6-8 hours a day. Sitting in a cheap, unsupportive chair for that amount of time can do real damage, not just for your posture, but for your focus and energy too.
Ergonomic office chairs are designed to support the natural curve of your spine, keep your hips at the right angle, and reduce the strain on your neck and shoulders. The difference between a quality ergonomic chair and a basic model is not subtle, and your back will thank you within the first week!
When shopping for office chairs, look for adjustable lumbar support, seat height adjustment, and armrests that move – the more you can customise the fit to your body shape, the better. Many of the most popular ergonomic office chairs on the market right now include the Herman Miller Aeron, the Secretlab Titan, and the Humanscale Freedom. These are premium options, but there are a number of solid mid-range choices too (if budget is a concern).
The bottom line – do not just grab that £50 bargain chair from the local supermarket and call it a day! Remember, your posture and productivity are worth much more than that.
Get Your Desk Setup Right
Once you have your sorted out a quality chair for your office, the next point of call is the desk. The height matters much more than most people realise – ideally, your elbows should sit at a roughly 90-degree angle when your hands rest on the keyboard. If your desk is too high, or too low, you will feel it in your shoulders over time.
In recent years, standing desks have become increasingly popular (and for good reason). Alternating between sitting and standing throughout the day will keep your body more active while also helping with your overall focus.
If a full standing desk is out of budget, consider investing in a sit-stand converter that sits on top of your existing desk; it can be a superb middle-ground option.
Make sure that your screen sits at eye level too – if you are using a laptop, purchase a stand or an external monitor. Looking down at a screen all day is a fast track to neck pain!
Sort Your Tech
A reliable setup does not need to be overly complicated – a top-tier monitor, a wireless keyboard and mouse, and a premium pair of headphones will cover most people’s requirements. Additionally, if you take a lot of video calls, invest in a quality webcam. The built-in camera on your laptop is serviceable but will typically deliver poor results. Combat this by installing an external webcam, which will invariably make you look much more professional (in a higher resolution to boot!).
Good cable management goes a long way too – a tidy desk equates to a clearer head. Pick up a few cable clips, or even just a simple cable tray, and spend 10-20 mins sorting the wires out (which will be a game changer and make a surprisingly big difference!).
Make It A Space You Actually Want To Be In
This area is something that is often overlooked! Your home office should feel like somewhere that you want to spend time, not somewhere you are forced to be. A few plants, some decent lighting, a few choice artwork pieces on the wall – these things matter more than you may think.
Lighting choices are definitely worth paying attention to. Overhead lights can often be harsh, whereas a good desk lamp with adjustable brightness provides you with much more control over the feel of the room. Warm light in the evening is easier on the eyes and creates a more relaxed atmosphere.
Storage is the other big factor! Clutter kills productivity – a few shelves, a filing system, or even just a functional set of drawers can help you to keep things organised and your desk clear.
The Takeaway
Building a home office where you actually enjoy working does not require a huge budget or a complete house renovation. Start with the fundamentals – choose a good space in the home, browse quality office chairs and find one that’s stylish and ergonomically designed, order a desk that’s correctly set for your body shape and height, and throw in some personal touches that will make the room undeniably yours! You will wonder why you ever had to leave home to begin your work, and wish you had set up a home office space much earlier in your career.
