Sole Statement Brand Interview
In our fast-fashion world, it can be difficult to find something truly unique. More often than not, we will wander the streets of any city and encounter men wearing almost identical pieces of clothing, and sometimes even entire outfits. Fortunately, there are ways to truly stand out from the crowd, such as with the amazing custom hand-painted footwear by Sole Statement. In my latest post, I am proud to present a quick Q&A from the founder – carry on reading to find out more.

1 Hi Christian, could you tell me more about Sole Statement?
Sole Statement is a UK-based custom hand-painted footwear brand built around skilled craftsmanship and a personal approach. Each project begins with an initial conversation to explore design ideas, which are then brought to life through hand-painted artwork on a range of shoes. What makes the process special is that every pair is completely one-of-one, created in collaboration with the individual or brand behind it.

2 What inspired you to launch your brand?
I’d always noticed how popular customised Nike Air Force 1s were, but I was initially sceptical about whether the paint would actually last or if it would crack after a few wears. At the same time, I felt there was space for a more refined aesthetic; designs that were subtle and intricate rather than bright and flashy.
So I started experimenting from my university bedroom, researching materials and painting my own trainers. Through that process, I learned how well leather works with specialist paints and gradually refined techniques that could be applied across different styles of footwear, including dress shoes.

3 What are some of your favourite hand-painted requests you have completed?
As a sports fan, some of my favourite commissions have been inspired by iconic sporting moments. One that stands out was painting Muhammad Ali during the famous 1974 ‘Rumble in the Jungle’. The design connected both shoes with an Ali knockout punch travelling across the pair.
I also love projects that carry personal meaning. For example, a Philippines-themed design for England rugby player Marcus Smith, and a pair inspired by Men’s Mental Health for NBA star Steph Curry.
4 What is next for Sole Statement?
Coming up, there are exciting opportunities emerging within the sports world as well as some major events, so you might even spot Sole Statement designs appearing on a few red carpets in the future.
We are also excited to collaborate with quality brands to expand beyond footwear and include other leather goods such as card holders, wallets and bags.
5 Finally, is there anything you would like to add?
Sole Statement has always been built around collaboration and conversation, so I’m always happy to chat with anyone interested in a project or simply curious about the process.
