Comfortable Yet Stylish Clothing
For many years, fashionable clothing was typically considered tight-fitting, uncomfortable, and often painful (especially designer footwear brands!). However, in recent times, many clothing labels have released collections that are looser and even more comfortable to wear. In my latest article, I will suggest a number of items that tick those boxes! Carry on reading for more.
If you don’t count the baggy 90s (when most formal wear clothing, especially suits, boasted a terribly loose fit!), fashion has swayed towards a fitted, sometimes even tight fit for clothing. It was even deemed the norm that footwear (particularly designer shoes for women) was tight and painful to wear! (even though they commanded a high price point).
Fortunately, thanks to the advent of casual attire and athleisure, many clothing brands (including those seen on the catwalk) have started to appreciate that even simple, easy-to-wear clothing has its place.
In the following sections, I will suggest several clothing items available in comfier variants to ensure you look good and feel great all day.
Suits
Suits are the ultimate formalwear clothing choice for men, instantly elevating your look. From standard single-button blazer styles, double-breasted jackets or the complete three-piece suited variety, each has its own unique place in the fashionista’s wardrobe.
However, off-the-peg suits are typically poorly fitted and very uncomfortable to wear (especially all day in the office).
Fortunately, a number of brands now offer super-comfortable, ultra-stretchy suits, ideal for office wear or even travel (check out my review of the xSuit 4.0 here to see how they fare!).
Additionally, if you have cash to splash, you could even opt for a bespoke suit that will be created exactly for your body type and specifications—you can even request that the tailor provide more space in the cut (such as the jacket and trousers). Your finished piece will be ultimately fantastic to look at and amazing to wear.
Jumpers & Hoodies
Clothing items such as jumpers, sweatshirts, and hoodies can be found in various ranges, including European designer brands, Japanese streetwear, high-street stores, and even sports retailers.
You can easily grab something that is comfy to wear but also uplifts your fashionable ensemble. This style of clothing typically blends with street style fashion niche, especially oversized branded hoodies and sweatshirts bearing the name of your favourite brand.
Additionally, classically knitted jumpers (or premium merino wool or cashmere hoodies) can be added to your formalwear styles, such as paired with trousers and shoes. Worn a size up, you can still benefit from a comfortable fit without compromising on style.
Trousers & Jeans
When it comes to legwear, you can swap out constricting formal trousers (such as heavy-duty cotton or tweed) with super-stretchy models that allow you to bend and move comfortably throughout the day. If denim is your thing, choose looser-fitting pairs (which are now fashionable once more) or even check out Diesel for their Jogg-Jeans (although many other brands offer their equivalent of jogger/denim combos now).
Shoes & Sneakers
Footwear can be a crucial area when comfort is key – numerous brands now offer soft and spongey insoles as standard in their shoes to keep your feet happy even during those long working days.
Even typically hardwearing boots can be found with softer internal fabric to defend against rubbing. Also, if you suffer from problematic feet, many big brands (such as Skechers and ASICS) offer orthopedic shoes for men to protect against injuries, promote foot health, and generally provide comfortable wear.
Sneakers and trainers are the ultimate comfort shoes, allowing you to showcase your stylish tastes without worrying about painful footwear. Some stores even offer sleek, understated models (such as basic white sneakers) that can be paired with formal attire. However, be aware that a number of designer brands forgo comfort for style! So remember to try them on before making a purchase!
