How To Wear A Denim Jacket With Joggers

Joggers or sweatpants are a guilty pleasure in the world of fashion, after long hours wearing fitted or tight clothing, there is nothing quite like slipping into a pair of casual trousers! For my latest post, I will show you how to wear them stylishly with a denim jacket on my men’s style blog.

Over the years I have grown accustomed to the idea of wearing joggers; finally, they have managed to shake off that social stigma attached to them (for years a tracksuit or jogging style trousers were the criminal elements outfit of choice in the UK). It is fair to give the credit for this change of opinion to the popular high street brands like Topman and River Island, with many younger brands such as BooHoo and SikSilk using them as their bread and butter products. As the popularity of street style shows no signs of slowing down, joggers are now even considered almost a necessity in men’s wardrobes, yet they are still something that can be quite difficult to pair with anything other than a matching casual sweatshirt or hoodie.

The classic denim jacket is one item of clothing which works as a juxtaposing contrast piece against a pair of casual joggers (as long as the colour and pattern gels with the wash of the denim), its timeless design will ensure your ensemble has an edgy urban look rather than giving the impression you are off to the gym! It would be wise to opt for a very slim pair of joggers, preferably a skinny fit to bring it bang up to date with the current trend of fitted clothing on men (not those 90s baggy styles which are doing the rounds!).

Outfit

For my denim jacket and joggers outfit, I chose from a couple of brands who are seemingly at the top of their game in their respective niches.

Levi’s was naturally my first point of call when choosing a denim jacket; they rarely step a foot wrong when it comes to outerwear. Many of their pieces are quite simple, yet rival brands often completely miss their target with design, colour and fit (the latter can be critical), but then this is why the denim giant has been in the business for so long. This new season release is much lighter weight than their traditional jackets, perfect for summer and also boasts a gorgeous light blue wash, the iconic red tab on the chest pocket always sealing the deal. If this type of blue is not your thing, you can always select a darker hue, solid black or even grey, giving you numerous options when it comes to matching against a pair of track pants.

BooHoo was the brand that caught my eye with their check print skinny fit joggers, blending a typically English looking grey tweed fabric with a modern casual trouser just worked (although I wasn’t too sure till I saw them in the flesh!). The multiple shades of grey on the sweatpants paired beautifully against the light blue colour of the jacket, the addition of the red and white stripes running along the outer leg added a quirky little touch too.

For the shoes, I pondered over a variety of different options, each offering something different to my ensemble. My first thought was to wear my favourite white designer Saint Laurent sneakers; their simplicity is the ideal extension to the otherwise busy look of the jacket and pants. However, after some thought I decided instead to pick out my Adidas Yeezy Static Trainers, they too are sleek, clean and bright white, but they add a touch of a gritty urban vibe to the proceedings which I found complemented the other parts of the outfit flawlessly.

I finished the look with a charcoal grey T-Shirt from ASOS (I can’t get enough of their basics, my wardrobe is filled with them!) and a few jewellery pieces – Omega Seamaster Watch, Valentino Rockstud Leather Bracelet and my Emanuele Bicocchi threaded silver bracelet. If you are on a budget, you can easily acquire cheaper pieces and get a similar style, Topman, ASOS or River Island offer some fantastic accessories which won’t break the bank.

Check out my handy tips for wearing a denim jacket with a pair of joggers –

  • Choose a denim jacket which compliments the colour and design of the joggers.
  • Opt for slim or skinny joggers to keep the look modern.
  • Jacket can be fitted or oversized, depending on personal preference.
  • Wear classic or minimalist sneakers for a cleaner look.
  • Finish the look with jewellery pieces to keep it edgy.

Location

We travelled to somewhere new for this latest selection of images, just outside of the Bristol Temple Meads train station. The location is a hotbed of diverse places to use for outfit photos, featuring wide open spaces and tall modern buildings, mixing it up and a welcome change from the vintage yellow stone buildings and hotels of Bath City. The colourless greys of the surrounding office buildings were a worthy backdrop to my denim jacket and skinny joggers outfit.

What do you think of my mixing of denim with joggers? Is it a look you might try or something that you have already worn previously? Please let me know in the comments!

I know, don’t what I’d wear most of the time if we didn’t have denim!

I love the glen plaid on these joggers- they give ’em some serious style oomph. And great call on the denim jacket!
